Lawn Care Tips – Fertilizing
A green and healthy lawn lifts the curb appeal of your property as well as the general appearance of your immediate neighbourhood. In addition to raising the property value through better showing and first impression your property gives, a healthy lawn provides you with a safe surface where you and your family can play and enjoy summer days. By maintaining your lawn and providing it with necessary care and nutrition, you will keep it healthy and lush all season long.
Fertilizing: Your lawn will need to have a ready access to nutrients during the growth season (spring and summer) as well as during the dormancy season (fall and winter). Compost will add organic matter and provide your lawn with a ready source of nutrition (see our section on health lawn tips for more information on composting your grass clippings). However, compost may not be enough to feed your lawn during peak growing season and therefore the fertilizer may need to be added to your lawn care program to ensure your lawn has enough nutrients to keep it healthy all summer long as well as to prepare it and aid during the dormancy season (fall and winter).
Inorganic commercial fertilizers commonly used to fertilize your lawn and aid it in growth, commonly contain three core active components nitrogen (N) to promote leaf growth and dark green color, phosphorous (P) for root growth, and potassium (K) for stress resistance. The potency of each component determines the best use and combinations of each, as well as additions of other trace elements such as iron (Fe) etc., will determine how well your lawn will react and absorb such fertilizer.
While to little fertilizer will starve your lawn growth, there is also such thing as to much fertilizer or wrong kind of fertilizer (to much of one component, to little of the other components etc). Use the wrong combination or to much of fertilizer and you can burn and damage your lawn (commonly referred as brown spots or in extremely severe cases your entire lawn may brown out giving it an appearance of dried up grass covering your entire yard space).
The other factors such as watering schedule (how often, time of the day you water your lawn, shade versus sun exposure to your lawn etc.) all determine how often, how much or type of fertilizer you should use for your lawn. If you are unsure of how and what type of fertilizer you should use, talk to your Maxigreen professional for additional information and consultation or let us take care of all of your lawn fertilizing and weed control thereby ensuring your lawn will receive the right combination and potency of fertilizer it needs to grow properly and stay green all season long.
